Previous cytogenetic studies have shown -5 (monosomy 5) and del(5q) were the most common chromosomal abnormalities in MDS/AML. However, the present study, as well as a recent high-density single nucleotide polymorphism array (SNP-A) study of 1,155 cases with MDS/AML, demonstrated that the cases with putative -5 identified by karyotype analysis actually retained primarily the short arm of chromosome 5 .
